Children are introduced to Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh in this art history and drawing activity. Students read a short biography of Van Gogh, whose vibrant, dreamlike, and joyful paintings belie a tragic and impoverished life. After learning about Van Gogh, young artists use colored pencils to recreate his famous “Starry Night” painting, noticing what they observe about his work as they do so. This resource lends well to a classroom study of fine arts and artists.
